ML Aether: Omni TTS ELO — What I Learned from the Webinar
A practical guide to speech evaluation, onboarding preparation, rating decisions, queue problems, and the technical issues contributors discussed during a Zoom Q&A.
I attended a Zoom meeting about ML Aether, specifically the Omni TTS ELO task family associated with the Outlier AI Aether Generalist project. I wanted to understand how the audio evaluation process works, what mistakes to avoid, and what contributors should do when tasks disappear or fail to load.
I have put the main takeaways here so that someone preparing for onboarding does not have to piece everything together from scattered discussions. I have also included the questions raised during the meeting and the explanations given by the project representative.
Why I wrote these notes
What I wanted to understand before doing the work.
The meeting covered two different subjects. The first was how to compare generated speech responses. The second was what happens when the Omni task is missing, unavailable, or technically broken.
These subjects are related, but they should not be confused. A contributor can understand the evaluation criteria and still have no tasks available. Similarly, a contributor may see a task in the dashboard but be unable to complete it because the audio or rating controls fail to load.
01 / Evaluation
Learn how to compare two generated audio samples, judge four quality dimensions, choose an overall winner, and identify the dominant factor.
Task preparation02 / Troubleshooting
Understand the difference between an empty queue, an assignment issue, and a loading failure, then collect useful evidence before contacting support.

First, what are we actually working on?
Understanding the task before attempting to rate it.
Outlier is a platform where contributors may be assigned tasks to help evaluate or improve AI systems. In this webinar, the specific task family was Omni TTS ELO.
TTS stands for text-to-speech. In this context, the system generates speech from text, and the contributor compares two generated responses. ELO refers here to the pairwise comparison workflow described in the meeting. The supplied transcript does not establish the complete internal scoring mechanism, so I am not assuming how the platform calculates its underlying scores.
| Term | Meaning in these notes |
|---|---|
| Outlier | The platform where contributors may receive assigned work. |
| Aether | The project name used in the contributor workspace. |
| Omni TTS ELO | The speech-response comparison task discussed in the webinar. |
| Reference transcript | The expected text against which the generated speech is checked. |
| Reference voice | The target speaker example used for voice-likeness evaluation, when supplied. |
| Response A / B | The two generated audio samples being compared. |
| Naturalness | How naturally the speech is delivered. |
| Pronunciation faithfulness | Whether the speech follows the intended text and pronounces words accurately. |
| QM / QMO | Project support or quality-management contacts as referred to by meeting participants. |
| Multimango | The task dashboard or workspace named by participants in the meeting. |
| Queue | The tasks currently available to the contributor in the interface. |
The most important thing I took from this distinction is that Omni TTS ELO is not simply a question of choosing the voice I personally like. I have to judge the responses against the task's criteria.
The complete evaluation workflow
How I would approach a task from beginning to end.
-
Read the instructions and transcript.
Understand what should be spoken and whether the task requests a particular tone, emotion, or speaking style. Some local-language tasks may have no additional instruction beyond the transcript.
-
Listen to the reference voice, if provided.
Notice stable characteristics such as pitch, timbre, vocal texture, accent, and speaking patterns. These observations will help when judging personal likeness.
-
Listen to Response A completely.
Follow the transcript while listening. Look for missing words, added speech, mispronunciation, unnatural pauses, background noise, and distortion.
-
Listen to Response B completely.
Apply the same checks independently. If necessary, replay the relevant parts rather than relying on memory of the first response.
-
Rate each dimension separately.
Recording quality, speaker similarity, pronunciation faithfulness, and naturalness measure different things. One weakness should not automatically determine every other rating.
-
Choose the overall winner.
Compare the responses holistically and select A or B when the task requires a winner. The webinar described no tie option for this decision.
-
Identify the dominant factor.
Select the dimension that most strongly explains why the chosen response won. It should agree with the ratings already made.
-
Review the form before submitting.
Confirm that every required field is complete and that both audio samples loaded properly. If the sample is unusable, follow the current rejection instructions.
The four rating dimensions
This is the part I would spend the most time practising.
During the webinar, the presenter repeatedly stressed the importance of judging each dimension independently. A response can be excellent in one respect and weaker in another. The objective is to identify those differences rather than letting one impression dominate the entire task.
Audio and recording quality
Question: Is the recording clean and intelligible?
Listen for:
- Background noise, including traffic, birds, or other voices.
- Clicks, static, crackling, and clipping.
- Distortion, strong reverb, and recording artifacts.
- Repeated loops, cut-off words, or obvious speech-generation defects.
Likely judgement: A may be better for audio quality.
The presenter emphasised intelligibility. Minor ambient noise is not automatically a failure; the important question is whether the defect is sufficiently distracting.
Judge the signalPersonal likeness / speaker similarity
Question: Does the generated voice resemble the reference speaker?
Compare:
- Timbre and vocal texture.
- Pitch range and stable voice characteristics.
- Accent and characteristic speaking patterns.
- Overall resemblance to the reference voice.
Likely judgement: A may have stronger speaker likeness.
A difference in emotion does not automatically mean the speaker identity is different. If no reference voice is supplied, the webinar says to use N/A for this dimension where that option is available.
Compare identitiesPronunciation faithfulness
Question: Are the intended words spoken accurately and faithfully?
Check for:
- Incorrect pronunciation of names, numbers, and technical terms.
- Dropped syllables and unclear articulation.
- Words omitted from the transcript.
- Additional speech that was not part of the expected text.
- Stumbling over words or phrases in a way that affects accuracy.
Transcript: Mira submitted the report on Tuesday.
Generated speech: Mira submitted the report on Thursday.
This is a content mismatch, not merely a different speaking style. The webinar says to treat additional speech as a faithfulness issue too.
Naturalness
Question: Does the speech sound like natural human delivery?
Listen for:
- Prosody and intonation.
- Natural pacing and rhythm.
- Phrase-level pauses and emphasis.
- Expressiveness and conversational flow.
- Whether the delivery fits the context and instructions.
Likely judgement: B may be more natural.
According to the webinar, the described naturalness interface requires choosing A or B. It does not offer a both-good or both-bad option for this dimension.
Judge deliveryThe distinction that matters most
| Observation | Dimension to consider | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Clean audio but flat delivery | Naturalness | A monotone delivery does not automatically mean the recording is defective. |
| Expressive speech with crackling | Audio quality | The recording contains a technical defect. |
| Voice differs from the reference | Personal likeness | The issue concerns speaker identity. |
| A name is mispronounced | Pronunciation faithfulness | The spoken content is not accurately realised. |
| A sentence is added to the transcript | Pronunciation faithfulness | The output contains speech beyond the expected text, as described in the webinar. |
| Mechanical rhythm and awkward pauses | Naturalness | The problem concerns delivery rather than signal cleanliness. |
A worked comparison
An illustrative example of applying the dimensions separately.
Imagine that both samples contain the correct words and there is a reference voice. The task is to compare the following responses.
Response A
- Clean recording.
- Flat, slightly mechanical delivery.
- Pronunciation matches the transcript.
- Voice resembles the reference.
Response B
- Audible crackling during speech.
- More expressive and natural rhythm.
- Pronunciation matches the transcript.
- Voice is less similar to the reference.
I would not automatically declare A the winner simply because it has cleaner audio. Nor would I automatically choose B because it sounds more expressive. I would evaluate every dimension first.
| Dimension | Possible result | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Audio quality | A better | A has a cleaner signal. |
| Personal likeness | A better | A resembles the reference voice more closely. |
| Pronunciation faithfulness | Both good | Both responses match the transcript. |
| Naturalness | B better | B has more natural delivery. |
Overall preference and dominant factor
Two decisions that should agree with the ratings.
Overall preference
Once the individual dimensions are rated, the contributor must select the overall winner. The presenter described this as a holistic decision rather than simply copying whichever response won one individual dimension.
For example, Response A might be cleaner and more faithful, while Response B has slightly more natural delivery. The overall choice should reflect the complete comparison and the current task instructions.
Dominant factor
The dominant factor is the dimension that most strongly explain the overall preference. It should be a dimension in which the selected response actually performed better, rather than one rated as a tie.
My practical check would be to ask: if I selected A overall, can I explain that decision using the ratings I just assigned? If not, I would review the comparison before submitting.
When should I reject or skip a sample?
Do not force a comparison when the sample is unusable.
The presenter described a new-comparison option for situations where a contributor cannot confidently evaluate a sample or encounters a problematic task. The precise controls and eligibility rules should always be checked in the active interface.
| Situation | Guidance from the webinar |
|---|---|
| An audio cannot be played | Do not guess. Follow the task's current rejection or reporting process. |
| The audio is in the wrong language | Use the supported rejection process. |
| Both responses are completely off-script | The presenter advised rejecting the sample instead of forcing a winner. |
| Both responses have severe looped repetitions | The presenter suggested refreshing the browser to obtain a new task in that situation. Follow the current interface's supported process. |
| Only one response adds content | The webinar says to penalize that response under pronunciation faithfulness. |
| A system prompt is spoken before the main transcript | The presenter said to disregard it and rate the task normally. Apply this only when consistent with the current task instructions. |
What happened in the Zoom Q&A?
The questions were mostly about task availability and loading.
A substantial part of the meeting focused on contributors who could not access Omni or who saw a task appear in the queue and then disappear. Others said that a task opened but failed during loading.
The project representative explained that task availability could be limited, tasks might be claimed quickly, and project assignment was not necessarily something the QM could change manually. The representative also acknowledged reports of a loading issue, although they could not confirm whether it had already been resolved.
Case A / Omni is missing from the dashboard
Assignment or availabilityA contributor said Omni had disappeared while other contributors seemed to have tasks. The representative indicated that the account did not appear to have an issue in the case discussed and suggested that the contributor might not currently be assigned to Omni.
The representative also explained that assignment could depend on project demand and could not simply be changed manually on request.
My takeaway: Another contributor's queue does not prove that my own assignment is broken.
Case B / No project appears when I want to work
Possible empty queueAnother contributor explained that they had worked on Omni before but could not find any tasks after being away from the project for several days.
The representative said that the task queue might have run out and that contributors would need to wait for more work from the client. They offered to check the account, while explaining that project assignment was not directly under their control.
My takeaway: Confirm whether the issue concerns assignment or task availability instead of assuming either one.
Case C / A task appears, then disappears
Queue or loading issueA participant described seeing Omni in the queue, clicking it, and finding that the task was unavailable. They also described refreshing repeatedly before the task disappeared from the dashboard.
The representative said task volume was lower than before and that tasks might be claimed quickly. They also acknowledged that multiple contributors had reported a loading issue.
The representative said the issue had been reported but could not confirm whether it had been resolved. A poll concerning loading problems was also mentioned.
My takeaway: A task tile does not guarantee that a task has been reserved for me. However, a task that opens and then fails to load may indicate a technical problem.
Case D / The audio appears, but the task returns to the dashboard
Reported UI issueA participant described entering a task, seeing the audio and reference area, and then being returned to the dashboard before completing the work.
The representative acknowledged that other people had encountered a similar issue and said it had been reported. They could not confirm whether the problem had been fixed.
My takeaway: Check the official community discussion and report the exact behaviour rather than submitting an incomplete evaluation.
Case E / A contributor requests an account check
Support clarificationOne participant offered to share their ID because Omni was missing from the dashboard. The representative replied that there was no apparent account issue and suggested that the project might currently be in queue for that locale.
This was the explanation given in that particular exchange. It should not be treated as a guarantee that every missing-task situation has the same cause.
My takeaway: Request a private account-status check when needed, but do not post contributor IDs publicly.
What the meeting did not establish
- It did not establish that every missing task is caused by an empty queue.
- It did not establish that every loading error has been fixed.
- It did not establish that a QM can restore a contributor's project assignment.
- It did not establish that an empty queue means a contributor has failed quality review.
- It did not provide a guaranteed workaround for every technical problem.
How I would troubleshoot Omni TTS problems
Identify the exact failure before trying random fixes.
| What I see | Possible explanation | What I would do |
|---|---|---|
| Omni is absent | Assignment, availability, or project status. | Check official updates and ask support to confirm assignment status. |
| The task disappears after refresh | The queue may be exhausted, tasks may have been claimed, or the interface may be failing. | Record the time and exact status. Check updates and retry carefully. |
| The audio does not load | A task-player, network, browser, or project-side problem. | Do not guess ratings. Follow the current rejection/reporting procedure. |
| Rating controls are missing | A possible interface defect. | Do not submit incomplete ratings. Report the problem privately. |
| Both responses are wrong-language | The sample may be invalid. | Follow the task's current rejection process. |
| A no-task message appears | The queue may be empty, paused, or unavailable to the account. | Check the exact message and official project updates. |
| An ineligible or unapproved status appears | A different account or project state may apply. | Read the exact status and request clarification from official support. |
A safe diagnostic sequence
-
Read the exact status message.
"No tasks available", "audio failed to load", and "not eligible" describe different situations.
-
Check official project updates.
Look for a current incident post, loading-issue announcement, or support instruction.
-
Retry once carefully.
A single refresh or a fresh supported browser session may help with some local interface problems. This is a general diagnostic step, not a confirmed fix for the reported Outlier issue.
-
Check basic local conditions.
Confirm that the internet connection is stable, the browser is supported and up to date, and audio playback is not muted or blocked.
-
Record the evidence.
Note the local date and time, time zone, exact error, whether the audio started playing, and which action caused the problem.
-
Report through the approved support channel.
Provide only the information requested by support. Redact personal information from any screenshot.
Example support message
Subject: Omni TTS ELO task loading / queue issue
Hello, I am experiencing an issue with Omni TTS ELO. At approximately [local date and time, including time zone], [describe the exact behaviour: the task is absent, disappears, the audio does not load, or the rating controls are missing].
I tried [briefly describe the steps]. The exact status or error shown was: "[quote the message]".
Could you please confirm whether this is a known technical issue or an assignment/queue status issue? I can provide a redacted screenshot through the approved support channel if needed.
Thank you.
What public contributor discussions suggest
Useful signals, but not a substitute for official answers.
I also collected public Reddit discussions relating to Aether, Omni TTS ELO, task availability, loading errors, and onboarding. These discussions are useful because contributors describe the situations they encounter in practice. They are not official policy, and an individual report cannot establish the cause of another person's problem.
Finding 1 / Task availability can fluctuate
Contributors have discussed empty queues, tasks becoming unavailable, and differences in the task families shown to different people.
Finding 2 / Contributors have reported UI problems
Public discussions include reports of rating panels failing to appear after audio playback and other problems affecting the task interface.
Finding 3 / Onboarding and access can be confusing
Some contributors have discussed repeated onboarding, assessment outcomes, and changes in project access. The accounts do not establish why any particular contributor received a given decision.
What I could not verify
My research did not identify a GitHub repository that I could confidently treat as an authoritative source for this specific Omni TTS ELO workflow. A repository using the word "Aether" may belong to an unrelated project.
That does not prove no relevant repository exists. It simply means I could not verify one as a dependable task-specific reference in the research collected for these notes.
My preparation checklist
Use this before starting a task or reviewing a practice example.

Final thoughts
What I would remember after attending this meeting.
The biggest lesson for me is that audio evaluation requires separating different kinds of evidence. A clean recording is not necessarily natural, a natural voice is not necessarily faithful to the transcript, and a similar voice is not necessarily the most accurate one.
The Q&A also made an important practical distinction: understanding the task does not guarantee that tasks will be available at every moment. Contributors may encounter queue shortages, assignment differences, or interface problems. Those situations need to be investigated separately instead of assuming the worst from a missing task tile.
I created this guide because I wanted the useful parts of the webinar to be accessible in one place. As I collect more meeting notes and public resources, I intend to expand the repository with additional preparation material, troubleshooting examples, and project-specific guides.
